Buddhism & Mindfulness

May you be held in compassion,
may you be safe and well, healed and protected,
may your struggles, your suffering and your fears be eased,
may you live with a compassionate and peaceful heart.

The Buddhism and Mindfulness program at All Souls NYC offers a variety of classes and groups to learn about and practice meditation.
"Buddhism and Unitarian Universalism value many of the same things, including experiential practice, study and self-inquiry, mindful awareness cultivation, insightful wisdom development, and loving-kindness, combined with active compassion in the world."

(Lama Surya Das, from the Forward of Buddhist Voices in Unitarian Universalism)
Currently, all programs are online.  No experience is necessary.  Join us!

Meditation and Discussion

Picture
Mondays, 10-11:30am
During this gathering, a talk and a guided meditation are followed by a discussion. The topics are different each week.  Some examples of topics we’ve covered include the challenges we face in our meditation practice, how we can turn our regrets into healing and growth instead of guilt, and the Buddhist understanding of impermanence.

Dharma Study Group

Alternating Tuesdays, 1-2:30pm
This is a drop-in group - all are welcome to attend once or as many times as you like. No experience with Buddhism or meditation is required. We explore the basic teachings of Buddhism using both a philosophical and, more importantly, a practical, approach.

Buddhist Authors

Thursdays, 10-11:30am
In this program we focus on discussing books on Buddhist topics (e.g. When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron) - though it’s not necessary to read them to join us. Each session consists of a short meditation, a summary of a chapter, a video on a related topic, reflections from Harry Miller, followed by a discussion.

Our Dharma Partner: Shantideva Center

We treasure the opportunity to offer an introduction to the dharma at All Souls, but we are not a dharma center. We highly recommend attending programs at Shantideva Center and other dharma centers. Our teachers Pamela Patton and Richard Einhorn lead a five-week introduction to Buddhism at Shantideva Center, and there are many other classes and retreats for beginners and practitioners of all levels.

Shantideva Center is dedicated to cultivating wisdom and compassion through the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism.  The center is affiliated with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), which is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa as taught by its founders, Lama Thubten Yeshe, and Spiritual Director, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
